Shotblasting is a method used to clean, strengthen (peen) or polish metal. Shot blasting is used in almost every industry that uses metal, including aerospace, automotive, construction, foundry, shipbuilding, rail, and many others. There are two technologies used: shot blasting or airblasting(sand blasting).

The capacity of each wheel goes from approximately 60 kg per minute up to 1200kg/min. With these large amounts of accelerated abrasive, shot blast machines are used where big parts or large areas of parts have to be derusted, descaled, deburred, desanded or cleaned in some form.

Often the method of transportation of the components to be blasted will define the type of machine: from simple table machines to integrated, fully automatic manipulator machines for full series automotive manufacturers, through to roller conveyors and strip descaling systems.

Airblasting(sand blasting)
Airblast(sand blasting) machines can take the form of a blastroom or a blast cabinet, the blast media is pneumatically accelerated by compressed air and projected by nozzles onto the component. For special applications a media-water mix can be used, this is called wet blasting.

In both air and wet blasting the blast nozzles can be installed in fixed positions or can be operated manually or by automatic nozzle manipulators or robots.
The blasting task determines the choice of the abrasive media, in most cases any type of dry or free running abrasive media can be used.

Shot peening is a process specifically designed to enhance the fatigue strength of components which are subject to high alternating stress.

Surface treatment procedures like grinding, milling, bending or heat treatment procedures cause Tensile Residual Stress. This Tensile Residual Stress leads to low life cycles of the parts.

Shot Peening converts Tensile Residual Stress into Compressive Residual Stress which leads to significant increases in the life cycle of parts and their maximum load capacities.

Shot Peen Forming

This process compresses and extends the superficial layer of the component causing it to bow. Typical applications include the formation of skins, wing flaps, access panels, and sections of fuselage.
Correction Of Distortion

(The reverse of shot peen forming) Shot peening is used to stretch and compress a localised area to achieve perfect flatness after a part has been distorted by heat or machining. Complex structural parts, ribs and spars typically undergo this process.

Abrasive blasting is the operation of forcibly propelling a stream of abrasive material against a surface under high pressure to smooth a rough surface, roughen a smooth surface, shape a surface, or remove surface contaminants. A pressurized fluid, typically air, or a centrifugal wheel is used to propel the media.

Abrasive blasting of steel substrates can provide the best possible surface preparation for coatings adhesion. If done properly, abrasive blasting thoroughly cleans the surface and creates a surface profile for mechanical adhesion. To achieve the economy available through abrasive blasting, the operator must maintain the productivity and efficiency of the cleaning system through careful attention to all of its components.

In blast wheel blasting, a blast wheel uses centrifugal force to propel the abrasive against an object. It is typically categorized as an airless blasting operation because there is no propellant (gas or liquid) used. A blast wheel machine is a high-power, high-efficiency blasting operation with recyclable abrasive (typically steel or stainless steel shot, cut wire, grit, or similarly sized pellets). The size of the blast wheel blasting machine, and the number and power of the wheels vary considerably depending on the parts to be blasted as well as on the expected result and efficiency.

Blast Wheel shot blasting machines are known for being more versatile allowing for a wider range of parts, production output and finish requirements. Blast Wheel blasting machines are available in more design configurations and capacity sizes for low or high production parts requirements. Most automotive remanufacturers use small steel shot media which offers a fine profiled consistent finish. 7) Ventilation System – The Dust Collection System provides negative pressure to the system to assure dust free operation as well as performs the pneumatic separation of the abrasive and waste mix.

Types of shot blasting?

There are two types of shot blasting:-

Grit blasting- Grit blasting is a process by which abrasive particles are made to impinge on a component to clean or modify its surface properties.Grit blasting is used to remove sand and scale in the fettling of castings, and for dressing of stampings and billets, etc. It is often used to prepare surfaces before welding (removal of scale, rust or paint), and afterwards to improve the adhesion of coatings (e.g. paint, or galvanising).

Abrasive blasting- Abrasive blasting is the operation of forcibly propelling a stream of abrasive material against a surface under high pressure to smooth a rough surface, roughen a smooth surface, shape a surface, or remove surface contaminants.

Wheel Blasting is a blast operation without air instead uses a wheel with centrifugal force to propel the abrasive against the parts. Because this wheel spins at 3600 RPM with a high velocity and high efficiency blasting operation with typically quickly time cycles. Due to its high velocity this type of blast utilizes metallic abrasives such as steel shot, steel grit, stainless steel shot and grit and cut-wire which are available in different hardness.

The advantage of wheel blasting is its speed of cleaning and the ability to efficiently blast large components. Also, it does not require compressed air to operate like air blast equipment. This can be economically very high, especially when blasting a large component which will require multiple air blast guns. However, the high velocity is also its nemesis because it can damage parts that can’t handle this pressure and you are also limited to the type of abrasive that you can use.

2. Air-blasting- In this procedure machine can take the form of a blast cabinet; the blast media is accelerated by compressed air and projected by nozzles in component. Also a media-water mix can be used in it for some of special applications, that would called wet blasting.
